Super Novice I   (SN I)

Understanding You & Your Dog – Leadership for Better Relationships

Eligibility . . .

·       Owners of dogs that have graduated from a formal beginning class or equivalent

Primary focus . . .

·       The Trainer - Extending the trainer’s knowledge of the fundamentals of canine behavior and training

Content . . .

·       Goal setting

·       Training philosophy – managing your training activities

·       Basics of human and canine behavioral theory

·       Understanding human <-> canine communication

·       Developing the trainer’s “bag of tricks” – fitting the proper training approach to your dog

·       Motivation, attention, channeling your dog’s energy, building desire where there is none

·       Learning to teach your dog “What to do” Improvement of skill execution and reliability at the Novice Level.  Heeling on leash, figure 8, stand stay, heeling off leash, recall, sit stay, down stay

·       Learning to teach your dog “What not to do”.  Problem solving – Why does my dog do that?  What can I do to get it stopped?  Approaches for solving common behavioral problems based upon an evaluation of the dog's and trainer's characters and lifestyle

Format . . .

·       50% lecture, discussion, demonstration, problem solving

·       40% personally coached floor work

·       10% group work

·       Weekly detailed handouts are distributed

·       10 Weeks, 1 session/wk, approx 2 hrs/session

Training for the purpose of exhibiting at obedience trials IS NOT emphasized in this course, however the principles taught are an important foundation for anyone who may develop the interest

 

Super Novice II   (SN II)

NOVICE Obedience Working Clinic

Eligibility . . .

·       This course is for any trainer who has attended SN I or equivalent and whose dog is at a post-beginning Novice class level.

Primary focus . . .

·       The Dog - Gives the trainer additional opportunities to apply the good training practices learned in SN I under close supervision

Content . . .

·       Working application of all principles taught in SN I

Format . . .

·       10% lecture, discussion, demonstration, problem solving

·       80% personally coached floor work

·       10% group work

·       No handouts are distributed

·       8 Weeks, 1 session/wk, approx 2 hrs/session

Course Fees

·       Courses are scheduled on an “as needed” basis

·       Contact Indy K-9 for a schedule of fees

·       Contact Indy K-9 to reserve your spot in a course.  Signup sheets are available at the school

·       All course fees are on a "Per Dog" basis

·       Completed courses may be repeated with the same dog and trainer at half price (if openings are available, no handouts)

Completed Courses may be audited (no dog, no handouts) at no charge

Super Novice IV   (SN IV)

All About Obedience Trials and Handling Your Dog To Success

Eligibility . . .

·       This course is for any trainer who has attended SN I or equivalent and whose dog is at a post-beginning Novice class level. 

Primary focus . . .

·       The Trainer - Introducing dog owners to the exciting world of exhibiting their dogs at Obedience Trials

Content . . .

·       Taking dog owners with no knowledge of Obedience Trials through a step-by-step process from the first thoughts of exhibiting to earning titles at the Novice level

·       Obedience trial terminology

·       Preparing your dog for the ring

·       Filling out entries, premium lists, judging programs

·       Preparing for the trip

·       What to do at the show site

·       Introduction to the AKC Rules and Regulations through the Novice level

·       Handling procedures and tips

Format . . .

·       50% lecture, discussion, demonstration, problem solving

Super Open I   (SO I)

Introduction to the OPEN Level Exercises

Eligibility . . .

·       This course is for any trainer who has attended SN I and SN IV or equivalent and whose dog is at a post-beginning Novice class level. 

Primary focus . . .

·       The Trainer - Introduce the trainer to methods of teaching new skills to their dogs.  AKC Open obedience exercises 

Content . . .

·       Builds upon the foundation of training presented at the Super Novice level. 

·       It introduces several different approaches for teaching AKC Open level exercises.  Heeling of leash, figure 8, drop on recall, retrieve on flat, retrieve over high jump, broad jump, sit stays and down stays with handler out of sight

·       AKC Rules and Regulations at the Open level

Format . . .

·       50% lecture, discussion, demonstration, problem solving

·       40% personally coached floor work

·       10% group work

·       Weekly detailed handouts are distributed

·       12 Weeks, 1 session/wk, approx 3 hrs/session

Super Utility I   (SU I)

Introduction to the UTILITY Level Exercises

Eligibility . . .

·       This course is for any trainer who has attended SN I, SN IV and SO I or equivalent and whose dog is at a post-beginning Open class level. 

Primary focus . . .

·       The Trainer - Introduce the trainer to methods of teaching new skills to their dogs.  AKC Utility obedience exercises 

Content . . .

·       Builds upon the foundation of training presented at the Super Novice and Super Open levels

·       It introduces several different approaches for teaching AKC Utility level exercises.  Signals, scent detection and retrieving, directed retrieving, moving stand, directed jumping

·       AKC Rules and Regulations at the Utility level

Format . . .

·       50% lecture, discussion, demonstration, problem solving

·       40% personally coached floor work

·       10% group work

·       Weekly detailed handouts are distributed

·       14 Weeks, 1 session/wk, approx 3 hrs/session

Super Competition III

Personally Coached Competition Preparation

Eligibility . . .

·       This personalized coaching is for Trainers/handlers who are experienced with Rich Strong training methods and have the drive and desire to excel. 

It's purpose is to provide uninterrupted personal attention for the trainer/handler who is interested in competitive training and exhibiting.  The performance of the team is emphasized.  Individualized techniques in training and exhibiting not taught at other levels are presented to maximize the team's potential.  Training and handling for the purpose of exhibiting IS emphasized.  It is composed of 100% personally coached floor work, which may include videotaping.  No handouts are distributed.  Sessions are available in 1/2 hr increments and are subject to the availability of the instructor.
